MS64 1938 Boone commemorative half in green PCGS holder, Just bought today from The LostDutchmen early birthday present. Paid $105 Good deal or not?
I'm not trying to be a wiseguy, but if you don't know if you got a reasonable deal or not, why did you buy it? With that said, I think Matt's reputation around here speaks for itself. Chris
Well, if you bought from the LostDutchmen of our Coin Talk forum, he made you an exceptional deal. Coin World has this marked at $ 425 in MS 64. Dave
Coin World tends to be rather high, the PCGS price guide has this at $200, which is still a bit overpriced, but I think you got a great deal!
I bought it simply because i like it whether or not it is a good deal. I am an amateur collector not professional and was just wanting some opinions. I in no way shape or form am speaking to matts reputation. Am i going to be thrown out of the room for asking for an opinion? My only concern is that similar specimens are selling on ebay for alot more and would like to know why?
I didn't suggest that you were questioning Matt's integrity. The point I'm trying to make, and there have been countless others before you, is that you should be researching your purchases beforehand. If you thought it was strange that it was priced low, then you should have asked yourself, "Why?" before you pulled the trigger. You're lucky that it WAS Matt and not some sleazebag on FleaBay. Nobody is going to ask you to leave. I'm really trying to help you, but there is a big difference between your original comment, "Good deal or not?" and "My only concern is that similar specimens are selling on ebay for alot more and would like to know why?" Chris
As far as I'm concerned you got a nice deal. 105 for a coin that is awesome looking, IMO, that you can enjoy and seems pretty much problem free, as well as probably something that will appreciate in value over the years, barring some unforseen change in people's coin collecting preferences. I know I would be proud to own a coin like that, and if ebay has it for more, then it can either be that the higher price is more in tune with it's value, and you got a great deal, or that they are asking too much. But it doesn't matter because (again just my opinion) it's a beautiful coin and I can't see it going for much less than you paid for by anyone. BTW, my Jan 2012 copy of Coin Prices puts a 1938 MS64 at 400 (retail pricing). The 2012 Blue book puts a single coin at MS63 at 90 and one at MS65 at 140 (wholesale), so I'd say that you got that coin for a really decent price.
Chris, i did not mean to be rude and maybe we got off on the wrong foot. Its not that i am under educated in the particular coin, as you can see i obviously checked around like ebay and such before hand. I had a sneaking suspicion that it was a (good deal) after i checked the PCGS coin facts page and also did some quick research on green lable slabs long before contacting the seller. My point here is any printed resource such as PCGS or Redbook are subjective and not always accurate. They all seem to be a little on the high side and you are right i should have worded the thread better. Anyways when looking for a value i dont always take the printed resources value serious. What i do take serious is what an actual human being tells me they will or would pay for it and thus is why i posted the thread.
You weren't being rude at all......just a little defensive, I think.....which is a natural reaction for many. However, I wouldn't be checking FleaBay for comparative pricing. There are too many bidiots there. You would be better off checking auctions like Heritage or even TeleTrade. By the way, I think you got a good deal. Chris
