This is an 1865 3 Cent graded by NGC with a CAC sticker. Compared to other MS 3 Cents, the strike on this one is the worst I've seen. Do you have any ideas on why the strike is so bad? Could it be struck thru?
    Thanks!

This date is notorious of having a long range of strikes. Based off of the triple die clashing on the reverse and the softness of the obverse devices, this set of dies is on the later state. But not quite terminal because there are not many cracks or breaks. These dies were rode hard, and nickel is one of the hardest metals that you can strike on. Which will take a toll on the dies in the long run.

If the planchet was not sufficiently annealed the hardness of the metal would also cause a poorer than average strike.

I do like the triple clash marks though.

Yeah, that coin is a glorious mess. I love it! :)
