A "chevron" is a line in the shape of a V or inverted V (often used in military insignia); ultimately derived from the latin word "caper" meaning "goat." While there are plenty of Severus Alexander portraits sporting both a moustache and a beard, this is the only die I have seen with moustache only. When I saw this example in a recent auction, I had to snap it up! And since today is Movember first, it's the perfect time to post it. It seems the moustache-only style was extremely unpopular among Roman emperors. Perhaps because it was associated with the "barbarian" Gauls and Germans? Wonderful 'stache, Sev! I was unfamiliar with this "Movember" thing. I was also not attuned to the nuances of facial hair and don't seem to have any mustachioed portraits without beards.
