Two Saint Gauden. Same price range. Same grade.

Tell me why I want or don't want a No Motto. I know why there is No Motto but are these considered more special with the story behind it?

IMO the price answers the question from the numismatic standpoint.
Beyond that it's up to the buyer.

It's obvious that some collectors think the no motto is cool because it was before the "In God We Trust" motto. I prefer the motto but ask an atheist and they would likely feel differently.

No one but you can tell you what you want. With that said, unless you have a preference, and if both coins meet your standards/expectations, choose the superior example.

The with motto is the scarcer coin by far; though they are both readily available. I'd go with motto if it were my choice.

"With motto" vs "no motto" mintage numbers as reported by Wikipedia:

    1908 No Motto 4,271,551
    1908 No Motto D 663,750
    1908 With Motto 101 156,258
    1908 With Motto D 349,500
    1908 With Motto S 22,000

I chose the 1908D no motto because it's what Augustus St. Gaudens envisioned and it's the lower mintage of the type.

A person may want the "no motto" just to have something a bit different but value wise it is pretty much the same. Special is in the eye of the collector.

I would go motto - usually better strikes and eye appeal.

He said they were the same grade and price, he didn't say they were the same date. We can assume one is a 1907 or 08 because we know one of them has no motto, but the with motto could be any common date from 1908 to 1932. People are assuming the with motto is an 08.
