Yes in deed, I slid the suit case out of the closet which was to heavy to lift. Opened the lid and behold rolls of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. I'm 47, looked at her and said Mother you need to look at these before you take them to the bank. Ok she said, have at it. 5 pint jars labeled , 1960s, 1970s,1980s,1990s and 2000s. We started unrolling pennies. My thought was first jar full would give me an idea of what years she collected the most. 35 rolls later the 80s won. Hardly any 2000s. So the eighties is where I started. Tonight I separated the eighties coins and picked 1982. Here is a photo of the 7 small date 82s. None appear to be copper, Six are 1982D and one 1982 I am a new member here and thanks to the information on these forums in previous posts was able to determine a small date vs a large date. Thanks to all who have contributed and shared their knowledge to this forum. Yes there still many rolls to go through, I stopped when the jar got full LOL Regards Ken
Welcome to CT!!! Sounds like quite a haul...and a lot of fun. Does your mom have any grandchildren?? If so I would suggest you get a couple LMC books and try to make some sets out of the ones in your mothers suitcase. You can then give the books and the cents to the grand kids and let them fill the holes. Just my 2 cents worth. Happy hunting...Mont
That my friend is an excellent idea!! I will let her know, that would make her very happy. Thank you Ken
OP? Yes sir, I read a previous post which you indicated the varieties of the large and small date 82s. The copper may be somewhat of an issue tho. LOL All help and guidance is greatly appreciated Regards Ken
Your welcome. I did something similar when my mom passed and I found jars of LMCs in her house. Took the LMCs and a few books to a local group home. The younger kids loved them. Oh and by the way "OP" mean Original Poster.
Title of this thread is more important than what those coins are. Mothers of old days were usually housewifes who were getting a money, say $100 note, from their husbands and while they were spending for the needs of house they were changing that major money into smaller and smaller changes. Therefore, those housewife mothers were the people who had to be busy with small coins more than their husbands and sons who think little about the small coins while those women have thought much about small coins. (We should admit, we their sons of such mothers are thoughtless people.) While your mother is still in the life (mine passed away two decades ago and missed that chance unfortunately), the best you can do is that; Put a One Penny in your pocket and show it to her that you have a penny now in your pocket and say that you'll always carry it in your pocket. (You can also give one penny to her pocket, however, together with a good gift that she needs these days.)
Today which should I pick? 80s 81s 83s etc. Thinking 88s why if I can find one with 89 reverse. Your thoughts please Ken
I'm getting ready to take images of a 1981 lincoln, which is wexler DDR-001 ... I'd start with the 83 myself ....
Uncirculated 1982-83 Quarters have the potential to be worth money. The US didn't issue mint sets and not many were saved at the time. Look for fully struck coins without scratches.
THANKS, nice Heads up I'll keep you posted. Maybe a while until I get to the Quarters. Again all info is greatly appreciated from everyone. I have not been collecting for very long and with everyone's help, hopefully I can feel confident that I didn't miss anything. Regards Ken
