Interesting piece https://www.pcgs.com/news/what-is-t...pJobID=1881951268&spReportId=MTg4MTk1MTI2OAS2
I have a few one kopeck pieces from Russia, before they stopped minting them. Given that they're 1/100 of a ruble and the ruble is pretty battered lately, I would say close to worthless.
They say that no where in the United States could you buy anything for a cent. That is false. If you go to the general store in Gustavus, Alaska there are a handful of Penny candy machines still there and working. They even give you cents to use in them. So I call fake news on the article.
Also a 1 kurus from Turkey (0.17 cent) and Japan's 1 yen (about 1 cent) aren't worth much...uh...neither is a penny(cent).
Until they started selling FOREVER stamps every time that the rates went up you needed one cent stamps. They are still sold and still useful to get the amount correct when you use old discounted postage stamps. Copper cents are still unwisely used to render blown fuses operational. As a temporary fix they are worth the risk. Unfortunately most folks who do that do not go out the next morning to buy the fuses that they need.
Trying to make this statement non-partisan. Moderators please remove if it is a violation. No matter what the politicians do to destroy the economy you can still use a penny for a flathead screw driver and you don't need to haul out your tool box.
Is it still true that it takes the US Mint 2.06 cents to make every US penny? I think I read that somewhere a few years ago.
Back in the '90s, traveling from Poland to Austria by train, I had the occasion to use the bathroom at a train station in the Czech Republic. A bunch of old ladies who were stationed at the entrance to the bathroom and whose job it was to keep the place clean asked for and expected tips. I didn't have any Czech money so I tried to get past them without leaving a tip. They blocked my way (they were very mean old ladies). The only cash I had was a few Polish coins so I gave them to one of the ladies so I could get past them. They started yelling and cursing at me then threw the coins in the trash. That's the meaning of worthless.
Corgi, Maybe the 'ladies' where stationed in the bathroom not to clean but to facilitate bathroom functions? ( i.e. Sounds like they could scare the poop out of the patrons?) J.T.
