I have an upcoming auction and there are several gold pieces that are listed as "Mort Reed Pattern Pieces".
I know the fellow wrote many articles and books, but what would the difference be on these coins that they be designated as such ?

    The coins are as follows:

    1841 $2.5 gold piece
    1972 $2.5 gold piece
    1795 $10 gold piece
    1838 $10 gold piece
    1866 $20 gold piece
    1907 $20 gold piece
    1915 $50 gold piece (Panama-Pacific Expo)

Any help with this would greatly appreciated.
    :)

They're probably provenanced to his collection.

    "1972 $2.5 gold piece"

    That would be rare!

Most likely just as Ardatirion stated, provenance.
