Morocco - Alaouite Hammered Coinage

    Having recently come back from there, I (as you do) embarked on trying to acquire an example of each of the currency metals used. Since this stuff is not mainstream, and quite often scarce to boot - it is not just a case of firing up Vcoins.

    While in theory there should have been fixed rates of exchange, due to the variability of the coin weights (usually reductions) they traded on intrinsic value. The ratios (which have remained largely fixed since the time of the Greeks) broadly as follows: 1g AU = 12½g AR = 750g AE.

    Thank the gods for standardization right, since metal purity adds another variable!

    In any event, here are the three examples, perhaps surprisingly the AE is the rarest.

    The bronze is 18thC, and only the flan was cast, unlike the later coppers. Pretty obvious from this example.
