Hi Guys, quick intro: I've collecting coins from circulation since I was a kid, never found anything great, but I still love the thrill of finding cool coins. Anyway, I came across a few morgans for face value, and would like to see how you guys would grade them so here we go.... http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0001.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0002.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0003.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0004.jpg I'll post other pictures later... Thanks in advance.
platanut platanut: First, welcome. Second; NICE coins. Especially from circulation. Someone will be along in a little bit to grade the coins.
Welcome to the forum! So you got those morgans for face value? That's awesome. The first one will grade about AU50 (due to the lack of luster and rim damage), and the second one will grade about XF45. Very nice!
Welcome to CT Great Deal on two very nice looking Morgans. That first one is well struck and has little wear. Thanks for sharing Darryl
Hey guys thanks for all the feedback, I've been reading on how to grade coins, but it seems like an art that you need to practice for a long time to get it right. Here are a couple more, can't wait to hear what you guys say... http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0007.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0008.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0005.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/rodrigo19/coins_20070602_0006.jpg
Yeah... I love the first one, but I don't fully understand how that dark area affects the grade of the coin. How do you feel affects the grade?
Are you asking about the 1878-S ? If so, the coin would be labeled as environmental damage and not get a grade. The coin has XF details though. edit - corrected a typo, I meant 78 not 79
That first coin is a very very nice coin, maybe an AU grade, definetely a XF. The second coin I hesitate about. It looks like someone might have polished it a long time ago? Ruben
ehh.... OK - more detail I had a coin which I thought was similar to this and you thought is was a AU grade. I asked at the time if I should try to clean it and you said NO! I think this one http://www.mrbrklyn.com/coins/dsc00032.jpg
Some more nice coins...the first is uncirculated with some carbon spotting, and the second looks to be about AU58.
Ruben the 1878-S posted in this thread is completely different than yours. This coin actually has something ( a foriegn material ) on it. Your coin is toned. Night and day difference.
Here this was the thread - I had to dig it up. I remember this coin had some lack smut on it, similar to some of my high quality morgans. It seems that only silver coins do this. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=11046
Ok... so I know cleaning is a taboo around here... but would there be any reason for me not to try to clean the dark spot with acetone?
