This Morgan is a common date (1884 - O) and I am not considering having it graded by a grading company. My question is this, do the rim dings make this coin worth only silver value? I am trying to learn. Thank you for your input.
Still a nice looking coin. I'm wondering if the coin may have been in some kind of a mount at one time? I forgot. It's worth more than just silver value.
Thanks for the replies. Knightly, I just now looked at the VAM page and will have to spend some time looking through all the possibilities. Thanks for the link. Idhair, I got this coin in a trade and don't know if it was in a mount or not. That would explain the dings.
While the coin is technically worth more than melt, it's value would still likely be based upon it. Common problem dates will often sell at a generic price, which is basically a "silver dollar premium" added to the melt value, although the amount can vary from dealer to dealer.
I agree with this assessment...the bottom line is it is a common date problem coin and it's value will be determined by the spot value of silver. If silver was to climb, any premium would likely disappear. Based on the marks on the rim, I believe this coin was at one time in some kind of a bezel or mount. However, as someone suggested earlier...if you can match this coin to one of the known VAMs it could be worth more to the right collector.
