Hello, I’ve recently become interested in coins. Mostly pennies and nickels. Upon sharing my new hobby with my mother she showed me some old coin books of my fathers. I had no idea he used to collect! So it was really exciting. She pulled out a couple books of Morgan Silver Dollars, a coin I didn’t know existed. (Still so much to learn) We spent some time looking at them, but right as we were putting them away she said that my father had taken them to a numismatist who said they were worth about face value. I told her that it was ridiculous and something that old and some of those with low mint numbers were definitely worth something but she didn’t seem to get it. I feel it’s my responsibility to research more on these coins so she can have a clearer understanding of what she has. I took some quick photos hoping someone would be able to tell me what you think some or all might be worth? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
Common mid to low Unc grade Morgans are worth 20-30 dollars, low grade worth a bit cover melt value (around $15). Key dates are worth much more, get a red book, and look for key dates. (Any CC mint Morgans are worth more than common morgans).
I have a very hard time believing anyone told her they were worth "face", even if this was 30-40 years ago. My guess would be that she's misremembered or misunderstood. As for placing a value on the individual coins, it would behoove you to photograph them individually, obverse and reverse.
If you're going to collect coins, get a 2018 red book, usually around $15, you can get one on Amazon, or Barnes and nobles. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/th...-book-of-us-coins-2018-rs-yeoman/1126049353#/
Some of those are nicer date/mm coins that have some value for sure. Here you can look up approximate values for the date/mms if you know approximate grades: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Hierarchy.aspx?c=744&title=Morgan+Dollar If you sort through the coins and find in that link it may be a higher value one, post as good of images as you can here of the coin and we can help with approximate grade and value.
There are some good coins in that book. Should be some pretty good value in there probably a couple thousand dollars total at the least
Good advice dispensed here. Take your time with them and have fun! And one other thing: do NOT try to clean them.
Nice Coins, I agree that you have at least a couple thousand bucks worth. The silver value alone will get you some dough. Do some research and study, who knows you may like coins and want to keep those.
Are those dollars in the CC holes actually Carson City coins? Check the back for a 'CC' mint mark. All the coins minted in Carson City have good premiums.
That numismatist was misleading you. Pull out that 1881-CC and take good pictures of both sides for us. Do you see that "X" your father put down next to it? X marks the spot, that's a pretty scarce coin, let's take a look at it.
Welcome to Coin Talk. Lots of good advice going on. Here are a couple of sites that have some good info. http://www.coinflation.com/coins/1878-1921-Silver-Morgan-Dollar-Value.html https://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/#/Morgan/Grades.
There’s definitely some winners there. I can’t tell from the pics if they’re cleaned but there’s some high grade common dates that are easily worth upwards of $50 each. And your 78 cc looks uncirculated which puts it at 300+. The 79 cc is a good coin too same with the 81-cc. Your 80 cc is nice original gray too and that’s just the beginning. Many look nicely circulated mid grade and original and others have nice rim toning from the album PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN OR POLISH ANY OF THEM. PLEASE This collection is easily worth well over $1k. And most likely double that plus. Could you try to take individual better pics of the nicest ones and the cc mintmarks
I think a lot of people are told their coins are worth "melt" value which they take to mean "face" value. Didn't we just have a post where someone got a roll of silver dimes that a customer took to a bank and asked for face value (a roll of clads)?
In addition to "The Official Red Book" which is titled " A Guide Book to United States Coins" , you might also want to buy "A Guide Book to Morgan Dollars". Wizard Coin Supply has both. I think you'll find them very useful.
Pickup a 2017 Redbook for $5. Same info that you need. Dealers will discount last years inventory to be rid of it.
Awesome advice. Sorry the photos are not individual or of high quality. I only took them before I fully understood the value. I will try to take better photos when I visit her next. So all in all I can come back with a number for her. Sounds like I can tell her it's probably worth $2,000-$3000 at best and definitely not "face value".
things are getting better for you with the second round of pictures. If that 1893-S is real it's worth a couple thousand on it's own edit: nevermind lol just zoomed in and there's an 1896 in the 1893-S slot. Still nice, the 1893-CC is a nice one
If you take them out of the folder, try not to touch the coins with your bare hands. Use some nitril gloves. You don't want any prints on those bad boys!!!
