I recived a few coins from a relative. Is this coin from roll or NT. What grade would it rate. This is my first time taking pictures soooo.
In my opinion, this coin is in EF40 condition. Wear can be seen in the hair above the ear and scattered throughout the other hairlines. On the reverse, there is light wear apparent on the breast and leg feathers. With the breast feathers still defined, I feel comfortable with the EF40 designation. Does the coin have any luster left to it? It looks to me like it actually has an attractive light gold tone to it that didn't come out right in the pictures. I had a few coins that were like that and looked flat in the pictures, so don't be discouraged. Capturing luster in a picture is an art. I can't do it, but my husband is a pro. I do get the feeling that this actual coin is much more attractive than it appears in the pictures. I did notice that the obverse is slightly darker. Was this coin in a belt buckle or any type of jewelry?
1883-S Morgans are hard to come by in higher grades such as yours. IMO its an Almost Uncirculated coin. Its good that you have it in the type of holder that its in. Dave in WV
The coin was just in regular circulation and put in a draw. The obverse is darker, almost like a charcoal image and the high spots do have ware. Thanks for the review..
Based on the pics I believe it to be natural toning - hard to say for sure though without the coin in hand. And toning like that really makes it hard to grade a coin based on a pic. But if I was a bettin man - and I am - I'd have to say any of the major grading companies would slab it AU50. 'Course I've been known to lose a bet
Here's a 1883-S AU50 certified by Anacs to give you a comparison: http://apps.heritagecoin.com/common/view_item.php?source=&Inventory_No=146626301#photo Whatever you do, DON'T clean it! Hope that helps...
Thanks everyone The coin in the link @ heritage was real close too the coin I have. (Even to the color) I read a lot about the downfalls of cleaning coins from this forum and would never touch the coin with any type of cleaner.
