The strike on this morgan looks especially sharp. Does anyone know whether it could be a proof?
    Thanks.

Based on the pic - I would say no, it's a regular business strike.

The rims should be more squared than the coin shown, but, nice coin anyway.
    What date is it?

Pretty coin, nice for an 1878.
What are the marks after the R in Dollar?
If die cracks, there is no doubt that it is not a proof.
Also, in that era they only made mirror finish proofs.

Don't mean to diverge a little and I hope I don't sound like a total idiot but how do you distinguish between DMPL and a proof? Say on an 1882.....

It's a very nice coin, but I'd say no about the 'proof' part.

Yes the Proofs had a mirror finish, but they also had cameo devices and legends. Not all of them mind you, but those struck with new dies did. And with Morgans, even the business strikes are found with frosted devices and legends.

Easiest way is to look at the fields - on a Proof the mirror finish is more pronounced, more highly polished. The quality of strike is different too since Proofs were struck more than once. That's why people mention the squared edges on rims and very sharp details in the legends. It may sound like it would be hard to see, but side by side it is easily apparent.

Still a very nice Morgan. I'd go with everyone else and say no on the proof. Has a nice strike though.

Thanks "moustache man"! I guess I need to find a proof to compare this 1882 to. Its very detailed. Looks like you could ruffle the eagles feathers. Looking at the edges they don't appear to be exactly square. Anyone want to sell me a proof Morgan cheap?! :goofer:

Does the EAGLES LEFT WING LOOK POLISHED DOWN. i THINK THE COIN IS BEAUTIFUL BUT NOT PROOF!
    Remember , only an opinion.
