Well I have been collecting U.S coins for many years now and I always think about starting a collection of Morgan Peace dollars but never really did. So I've been debating for a a yr or so now and still haven't got into it do you think I should?
You talking about Morgan and Peace dollars both? I say go for it. Peace Dollar set wouldn't be all that hard to put together. Not too many key dates. Plus it's a nice looking coin to me least. If you get get them at resonable prices then it's well worth it. I'd like to put together a Peace Dollar set myself but right now I'm focused on my halfs.
Morgan dollars were minted 1878 to 1904 + 1921. Peace dollars were minted 1921 to 1935 Here is a link describing US dollar types & dates: http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/Silver_Dollars
buy the book before starting on a set. I think you should collect what you like. (I have a small collection of Morgan dollars myself). If you want to collect Morgans, I suggest you get a book like the red-book of Morgans and view the population reports before you start. You will find almost every date is available in any almost grade in almost any quantity. (Of course I'm not referring to the key date coins or MS69 grades). AU coins are everywhere and can sell for a small premium over silver. Good luck & please post your coin photos here.
Morgan and (to a lesser extent) Peace dollars are and have been very popular. Probably close to Lincoln cents are the most popular. That means two things: - They are relatively more expensive (supply vs. demand economics); negative factor for collectors - They will continue to rise in value; positive factor for collectors But the difference between Lincoln cents and Morgan/Peace dollars is that the Lincolns are a bit overpriced because of all the hooplah over the 2009 designs. I see them falling back (or at least stagnating) in the next several years. But the silver dollars will continue to move upward. IMO
There are a lot of different ways you can collect Morgan dollars. Personally, I have a penchant for MS specimens, but I don't have deep pockets so I know that I will never complete the entire set unless I hit the lottery. If you want to try to put together a compete set, you will likely have to accept that some of the key dates will be lower grades, possibly VF-XF. So, you would have to decide for yourself if it matters that you may have a wide range of grades, or if you would prefer an evenly matched set, say, in the VF-XF range. I also collect DMPL's, toners and CC's, and it doesn't matter to me that I have many multiples of the same dates and/or mintmarks. This still makes it fun, and you can continually search for as many specimens as you want. You might also consider VAM's, but then you would have to have even deeper pockets because there are 4,000+ varieties with new ones being added regularly. Chris
