i have been away from collecting for many years. my interest is in silver dollars but budget doesn't allow for early coinage. what are members opinions regarding the silver dollars from seated to peace? have the prices been running up a lot the last few years? are some grades overpriced? i'm not particuarly looking at this as an investment, as i enjoy collecting any of these series, but i don't want to buy overpriced coins. thank you all so much for your time and assistance. it is truly appreciated!!!!.......steve
Steve, Sign up for an ID on Heritage (www.ha.com/coins) and look at their auction archives for the best (and free) source of pricing info. I'd also suggest you get a grading guide, as the standards may have changed since you were last active in the hobby (gradeflation). You are correct to be wary of overpriced coins -- they far, far outnumber the fairly priced ones. The best piece of advice I can offer is that you post coins you are interested in here and the helpful forum folks will provide their opinion and/or you find an experienced mentor to assist you. Good luck...Mike
I am not an experienced collector and the people in here can give you all kinds or good information but for my money , whats left of it, the mogans and peace dollars are something I will look at very closely this year. you can get some nice coins for not a lot over the melt value of silver. that to me will be hard to pass on. In a recent mailer from NGC they recommended the somewhat lower grades of silver dollars and having the most potential value increase as apposed to higher graded and slabbed coins. Of course that is not what you are looking at but it would be nice to see your coins increase in value over the years. kind of a way to confirm that you have made solid choices. what are metals going to do this year ? many believe that the lows have been tested and now is a great buying opportunity . Most believe that the metals, all of them, will close substantially higher in 2007 than they will in 2006 but no one really knows. collect what you like and can afford without mortgaging you house lol
srkjkd: Sure, the prices have been run up over the past two to three years, however, Coin World's weekly Market analysis is still very hot on better date dollars, they even have an article in this month's Coin Values (March, 2007 shipped with the 01/01/07 issue) that identifies some of the 'sleepers' in the series. They are using as a basis those coins that have underperformed the market in the past two years. So, this may be a place for you to start. Also, Seated dollars have been run up, but mostly as a type coin.
My advice would be to stay with coins graded in the MS63 range. These still can be had for a decent price , but once you get into the higher grades the prices head north in a hurry. The question is , would you rather have 2 at the 63 prices or maybe 1 at the 64 / 65 price. Everybody has their own agenda , so it depends on your personnal goal and funds available to meet those goals. If you are looking at coins already slabbed you might look hard at some coins in those " 2nd tier " TPG holders , PCI as an example. The coins almost always sell for less and I can tell you from my own personnal experience that you can find some real bargains. Just be sure to buy the candy , not the wrapper around it.
thank you!! thank you all for responding! at the risk of being laughed at here are some of my recent purchases. i don't have a scanner but all coins are white, lustrous (even the peace dollar), w/o distracting marks. all were purchased thru auction at heritage and photos are actually on there. i tried to value them before purchasing, thru the archives and coin world ads as well as other dealer websites. following are morgans....1881 ms 63 anacs $63 1882 ms 64 $60 1883-o ms 63 $35 1884 ms64 $39 1926-s peace....very lustrous w/ good strike ms 63 $55. all were certified. most by anacs, which seem to go cheaper. i chose the coin and not the holder tho!! also bought a 1890cc in fine condition@ $86. it was nice and problem free. got it for close to the price of clean and scratched coins which i thought was odd. it was probably a little expensive but was attractive. i welcome all advice. thank you all so much again!!!!!....steve
