I would like to know how a coin gets doubled in one place but not another. I recently bought a 1888-0 hot lips and i am amazed that the profile is so strongly doubled but othe parts of the head are not. I have another coin where united is doubles but states is not. doubling like this is not uncommon in morgans I can't beleve that te dies were manufactured with this many defects so how dose it happen
Actually it is the dies....:smile Just like the famous 1955 cent, the die was doubled when it was made. There is no other way to get these wonderful errors..:kewl:
The Morgan Dollar Series offers the collector the most varieties of any series. So much so, that Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis authored a book together titled Comprehensive catalog and Encylopedia of Morgan and Peace dollars. The bulk of the book is devoted to morgan dollars, their history, their die pairs and the many varieties that are available. :smile
It happens because of the way dies are made, or were made to be more correct as they don't use the same method any more. To make a die you take a blank piece of steel and press it into a hub - a hub is another piece of steel that has the design carved onto it in raised relief. Then they would take the die and anneal it (heat it up to soften the metal ) and then the same die would be pressed into the hub the second time. It is the second pressing that creates the doubling. It occurs because the die and hub were not aligned exactly as they were the at the first pressing. As to why the doubling is only apparent in some areas and not others, it's because the alignment is only off a tiny degree so doubling only appears in some areas. The larger the degree of misalignment the more doubling that can be seen on a coin.
thanks for the info. it stil seems so odd that some features are doubled ans adjacent areas are perfect.
