Is there any of you that actually does NOT like the Morgans? What dates do you look for? I like the 1880-O. I read somewhere that the mintage amounts are meaningless, because theres no way to judge what was melted down. Anybody disagree with that? Is there any Point in collecting the poor to fair Morgans that sell for under $10??? I figure the rubbed out ones are over-priced silver scrap. At the coin show here in my area, a dealer had three silver bullion bars. 100 ounce bar for $750. The Assay mark can add a small premium to the price.
LETSBUYCOINS, I working on a set of New Orleans mint Morgans primarily MS-64 & 65 in the common years and MS in those higher $$$$ years. I have a MS-63 1880-O. My goal is David Bower's Optimum Grade / year as he has listed in the Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars. I'm well on my way with 7 of 26 (available O-mint years) optimum and 8/26 one grade below. I'm getting to the expensive $750 - $25,000/ coin years so my collecting has slowed wayyyyy down, but I will complete my collection one day. I'm working on a collection of World gold coins now (thanks to an interest sparked by our own GDJMSP )
Morgans are o.k. I prefer the Buffalo Nickel. My favorite Morgan is one that my mom's friend brought back to me from Las Vegas when I was little kid. It's a common date and scratched up and worn, but it resides in a special place in my collection and I'll never sell it. Who knows how many of those scratches were caused by Las Vegas gamblers at the roulette wheel or blackjack table? Maybe it was their last dollar before Lady Luck smiled on them and they won a fortune. Or, maybe it was their last dollar... period. That's one of the joys I get from collecting coins. You can hold an old coin in your hand and wonder where it's been, but never knowing. Ah, if they could only speak!
