I saw an auction on E-Bay where the seller had 5 Morgan dollars for sale, all were MS-66 graded by the SGS grading service. I know that SGS probably grades coins higher that PCGS or NGC, but how much higher?
The coins looked nice but I'm kind of worried about "SGS". The coins were dated: 1882-P, 1883-P, 1884-P, 1885-P, & 1886-P. The bidding started off at $150.00. Do you think the Morgans are worth it? Thanks.

Those are special, and truly rare - SGS coins graded below MS70!

In general, 5 to 10 levels, occasionally up to 12.

Without seeing them I would guess they would be anywhere from XF to ms 62.

    Who was the seller?

I'm betting I know who the seller was but will let you reply.

Have to agree STRONGLY with both replies posted so far. Those being basically RARE cuz it's not MS70 and XF to MS62 range.

I'd put them darn near the "junk silver" category myself. Are they worth $150? Yes, if they send you ten of each date for your winning bid of $150. You'll get 10 GROSSLY over graded coins that are probably cleaned but you WILL get the silver!

    PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

TOUCH THEM NOT!!! If you can't trust the accuracy of their grades, how can you be sure of their authenticity or the naturalness of their surfaces, hmmm?

Thanks everyone!! I think Ill pass on this auction! I'm just wondering how many coins I've bought BEFORE coming to this Web Site, that I got "taken"! I have used the "COIN PRICES" magazine to get the values of the coins I've bought. Just wondering how I've done?!?! No question here.....just thinking out loud! LOL

Your decision to pass is a wise decision, as SGS is a self grader, and the coins are grossly overgraded. Coin Prices provides a good guide for valuation, but always try to buy below those prices if possible, as those values often represent the highest retail prices paid for a particular coin.

    sgs on ebay

It's been discused here often, but here is a little refresher. SGS slabs thier own coins to sell on ebay, no more no less. example: they take an AU morgan grade it MS66 in hopes to sell it for MS63 price. unfortunatly they sell a lot that way.
