Hey folks. My son and I are new to the coin collecting world and I've kind of become fixated on Morgans. I love their heft, age and beauty. Anyhow, I ordered a random date Morgan from eBay and it arrived today. To my surprise it was an 1878 with 8 tail feathers! strange that a rarer coin would be sent for a random purchase. I'd love thoughts on the coins grade. The edge of the upper left obverse and lower left reverse is a bit worn down.
Nice score on a random date coin, though I can't tell if it's an AU or a pretty high grade MS from the images.
Kleenex test.......lay some over the coin, and if it shines, it's silver. If it's dull, lifeless, and greytoned, it's base metal
I don't own a 1878 so I have nothing to compare it with, but that 7 looks different from the other MS Morgans I have with a 7 on them. No idea is that is a problem. I hope the Morgan experts can tell me.
It can be silver and still a fake. The silver content would be around $14. As an undetected fake it would be worth much more. To the OP, whom did you buy it from? That may give some clues.
I didn't notice that at first. If it's fake, then @Mark Metzger should really contact eBay or wherever he bought it from and request a refund and report the seller.
After looking at mine through a loupe, a little curvature is normal. This looks like too much, but maybe it's an illusion from the lighting. I think the coin looks off, but let's let some others weigh in. Wish I could post a picture of mine, but I have a terrible time photographing through a slab.
Do you see clashing? I think I see hints of it but its hard to tell from the pics. If there isn't clashing you may have a nice one!... @messydesk!!
