I picked this Morgan Dollar up for $13 about 2 months ago. I think it may be cleaned or PL maybe DMPL what are your thoughts on this coin?

Looks possibly fake to me, Josh...(or am I just imagining things?)

    edit: changed "horribly" to "possibly"

It may also be the angle of the image in the first pic, but details just do not look right to me. But I do not know much about Morgans so I will wait for someone more knowledgable to chime in...

For a coin that you say supposedly has full cartwheel luster, the hair/head area on the obverse looks a little strange to me.

Where did you buy the coin from?

Your photos make the coin look suspect. At the very least, the obv looks polished.

Remember, the 21 is of a different (and "cheaper" looking) design, but the coin is most certainly legit (authentic).

From what can be seen in the photos, it is also most certainly a problem coin.

Thanks Books. That explains why it didn't look similar to the few I had sitting on the shelf (from the 1880s).

Looking at the new photos as well, I would agree that the coin is authentic.

What problem do you think it is? polished/cleaned? The cheek on liberty is very shiny/reflective

I did that reflective test to see if it was dmpl it did reflect text to about 2 in putting it in the neighborhood of prooflike.

If it were PL/DMPL, one would not expect to see a "shiny/reflective" cheek; notice the lines going across it and continuing into the fields in both directions.
