I know that the standard weight for all Morgan Dollars is the 26.73 grams. My question is that how much less can a coin weigh if it is genuine. I had recently bought a 1881 CC morgan in G4 condition and since it is very worn it seems to weigh less than the others. However, I am not sure exactly, but it was close to 1 gram less. Would this mean that it is a fake or can they possible weigh that much less if they were very worn? Everything else looks exactly genuine on it and it was from a very reputable seller. What do you all think, how much less can they be?
I would be suprised if it was that much less but in G-4 it might be possible. I would say you need to get some other examples in roughly the same grade and see how much less they weigh.
I agree. That seems like way to much weight to lose. My understanding is that when a coin wears most of the detail loss comes from the metal being slightly deformed on the surface during circulation...not from being worn off. Sure, some will be removed from abrasion over time...but I can't imagine a whole gram.
