Howdy Folks, here is the first US coin entered in my collection. I’m not used with the American grade system (within a few days I should get some books) but I’d say it’s a AU55 although the scratches on the observe and the rim nick on the reverse might have compromised the coin more than what I think. There’s still some luster and in hand the damages look less serious than in picture. Please, any suggestion is welcomed, I’ve a lot to learn! Besides, how much would such a coin cost in the US? Thanks for your help.
As you mentioned, between the rim ding and the very heavy reed marks on the cheek the coin stands a good chance of being considered damaged and thus ungradeable. It looks to have AU details. This date/mint is pretty common and typically found in higher grades, and so the coin in this condition would probably be worth about $20.
Thanks a lot for your answer. I didn't know that a coin can even be ungradeable if damages are present (I thought that the grade would simply be lower).
I have to agree with GDJMSP's assessment. The bag mark on Liberty's cheek is distracting, not a lot of the breast feathers on the eagle are distinguishable. That nick on the reverse rim takes it down. I'd say $20 is a fair value. I saw a 1921 Morgan the other day at one of my regular coin dealers that was beautifully toned from end of the roll, ANACS graded it MS-63; however, there are deep bag marks on the eagles breast, and liberty's face, and I think ANACS overgraded this coin. At best, it would be a low AU. I walked away from it and went with a PCGS MS-63 1887 Morgan instead.
Im sorry, are we all looking at the same coin? this is a mint state coin easily.there is no traces of wear with luster all over the coin.although it has a mark on the cheek, that is not "damage" it knocks it down a little but this coin is easily mint state.an AU coin would have alot of missing luster from the devices. this is an AU58 morgan, clearly there is luster missing, numerous hits.
Ivano, here is one of my 78-S in MS64. I paid $75 for it which was a good price considering that CDN Bid was $80 at the time. Unfortunately, my photos don't do the toning justice. It is bathed in golden honey with irridescent blue along the rim on both the obverse and reverse. Chris
Sorry guy's but I'm thinking Mad is right on this one. The rim ding doesn't look bad and the cheek just has the reeding from another Morgan in the same bag. My guess is MS-62 and I know what I'm talking about as I do alot of guess the grades lol
Blow the picture up to its full size. On the obv - look at the hair, the stars and the legends. All show breaks in the luster - light wear. On the rev - look at the right side star, eagle's breast, eagle's cheek, wing tips, tips of the talons and the bows in the ribbon. Again, luster breaks - light wear. The damage part, well that would be up to a TPG to decide. But given that the coin is extremely common in higher grades, I think they are going to go with it being damage.
sorry, dont see it.I see full luster with only trace of breaks.not like a AU coins should exhibit. And "damage" no,bag marks are not considered damage.I have a coin just like it graded, lower than it should be but lower, not damaged. compare PCGS AU to photo
It's not just the reed marks, it's the rim ding too. You cannot compare an O mint coin to an S mint coin. They are two entirely different animals.
Whistle away - there is also a large difference between frost breaks and wear. If you think the coin is MS, fine by me. But IMO it is not.
Then I would say when it comes to morgans, maybe you should hold off on your "opinion" to others.just comparing coins to what the "professionals" say.
with 25k posts behind your belt,I would have thought your opinion would have been closer to the truth.I learn something new everyday.Learning to laugh at yourself is good, so you can join in when others are laughing at you. please dont act like some posters when they dont hear what they want to hear.I am posting facts about this coin, not "opinions" Need a TWIX???
Facts ? You dare to say you are posting facts based on a picture ? Now you're gonna get me laughin again What you have been posting regarding the grade of that coin is your opinion - not facts. These are facts - - You cannot compare an O mint coin to an S mint coin. They are two entirely different animals. - the coin is extremely common in higher grades, - the rim ding and the very heavy reed marks on the cheek the coin stands a good chance of being considered damaged and thus ungradeable. These are opinions - - It looks to have AU details. - this is a mint state coin easily. Want some more facts ? Your so called "professionals" will grade coins with light wear as high as MS67. Grading coins based on pictures is a skill, just like grading them in hand is a skill. It requires you to correctly interpret the pictures in order to arrive at an accurate grade. You cannot compare a picture of one coin to a picture of another coin and say see, it's this grade. Another fact - I can grade Morgans in my sleep.
This is where we part ways on this coin Mad. Yours is opinion too just like mine and Dougs. Heck even TPG'ers it's just opinion. I still think the coin is MS but I could be wrong for sure. That is just my OPINION
I think giving advice,Bad advice to someone regarding their money is no joke.you might not be able to grade a coin by a photo, but there are alot who can.You can opinion all day long when it comes to whetever you want, that is your god given right, and rights to us Americans.but remember, when you do give advice back it up. I can say all day long this is this, you can say all day long this is that. but in the end,if you cant show something to prove what you say, your words are dust in the wind.and people dont want to breathe that in.in time your words will be ignored.and after that, you will cease to exist period. so you can rant & rave all you want about your "opinion",and I find it under-classed you continue to go on & on about your "theory's" of your "opinions".when I have provided cold hard evidence. If you cant grade a coin by photo, than you have no business giving "opinions" on coins.you may specialize on other subjects. But in this case Morgan's are not your strong area.Like I said Want a TWIX??? take a minute and think it over.Im not going to go on & on.You could have cost this guy about 30+ dollars, maybe to you thats not alot, but to some it is food, rent, electric, gas, water. So maybe you will consider typing, and or not typing some times. you can walk with a big stick, but if you cant swing it,then your no good for using it. please provide some proof to your AU claim.I have more proof if you would like me to prove it.or you can forfeit at any time. your right Duke,Im walking away from this.
mad you haven't provided proof of anything. How can you possibly even think that you can prove the grade of a coin by using pictures ? I can't prove its grade anymore than you can. All either one of us can do is to offer an opinion on the grade. The only thing that is certain - one of us is wrong.
