i picked this "set" up w while back- 100_5722.JPG the coins are all 1965 with no mint marks. The plastic case has Whitman on it.I did not get any kind of paperwork with it,just what you see in the pic.The coins are all in beautiful, uncirculated condition. My questions are:
1.what do I have? Is it a mint set of some kind? Or just some coins someone put in a case?
2.If I wanted to get them graded, how would I do this-each coin seperately or as a set?
3.would it be worth getting them graded at all?
Thanks in advance for all replies.I am really enjoying being a part of this forum, you folks sure know how to make a new guy feel welcome(unlike another forum I tried).:)

A lot of the time you'll see sets like called or labeled as Mint Sets, but they aren't. 99% of the time they are just coins picked out and put in those cases by a collector or a dealer. 1% of the time the coins might actually be from Mint Set, one where somebody took the coins out of the pliofilm package used by the US Mint and put them in a case like that. But with a '65 set that never would have happened because the coins came in a case similar to that to begin with.

You could do it either way.

Probably not. I can't tell based on the pics but the coins would have to go 67 or higher to make it worth while. And it's highly likely they do not.

Someone collected the best examples of uncirculated coins from 1965, or took them out the OGP and placed them in the Whitman lens. I'm betting they were plucked from circulation, or bank rolls.

1965 there were no proof sets made by the Mint, as well as 1966 and 1967; and that year the Special Mint Sets were in the cellowrap sheets in a white envelope. 1966 saw the use of the hard lenses for coin sets, and 1968 was the first year that the Mint placed proof coins in the hard lenses.

They could be SMS coins that have been placed in a Whitman holder, although I doubt this is the case. Close-up photos of the coins would make such determination fairly easy. Business strike coins from 1965 are some of the poorest struck coins I know of and finding high grade MS specimens is quite a challenge. I recently submitted several '65 dimes to PCGS that I hoped would pull a 67 but they all came back 66's...ouch!

No the 66 and 67 sets came in a hard plastic holder similar to the Whitman holder, in 1965 they were still in the pliofilm.

I would also suspect that it is just a put together set.
