Since I'm still going through my boxes of Lincoln's (it'll take me months - maybe years), thought I'd share some of my latest finds. Since I have 9 pictures to show, I'll have to post twice. Sorry bout that. The first two coins are missing dates. One is also missing the "LI" in Liberty. The reverse side is of the first coin. It's not looking too good either. Is this from over polishing, weak strike, grease filled die??? Also, are any of the coins shown worth keeping? Sorry about the dirt on some, but as you can see, I wouldn't know how to clean them. That olive oil trick doesn't work.. at least not for me. I didn't try it on these coins though. Just a couple of nasty ones that had nothing remarkable about them.
Ok, on the '73 - are these split serifs or did I stumble (yet one more time) on another mechanical double? The '65 shows cud breaks, right? I'm trying to learn all these things as I go along.
As has been said so many, many, many times on this and all coin forums DO NOT CLEAN COINS. What you have is absolutely worth saving. The error collecting phase of coin collecting is growing and all of them will soon enough be worth a good deal. You may want to check such things out with coppercoins.com. The guy there, Chuck, will be glad to discuss all of yours and even if you send them to him he will photograph them, document them and return them. He does this for information for his books on Lincoln Cents of which he has two now being sold.
very interesting! ive seen several errors on here and other coin forums and i think the "bug" has bitten me! I may start collecting error cents. any advice?
by low....sell high Seriously though, get a copy of the cherrypickers guide and read up. There are several sites (I'll have to add the links when I get home) that are good resources too. Lincolns are a great way to start as getting rolls at your local bank is relatively easy and cheap. Beyond that, you can just simply start searching the pocket change that comes your way every day. My first error was very minor and worth only about 10 cents....and 200x dime where the last digit was grease filled. It has a perminant home in my collection though as its the coin that brought me back into collecting.
speaking of getting rolls at the bank, I just bought $10 in pennies and gonna take em home and start searching for those errors! I will definitely share any good finds!
Don't worry, Carl. I haven't cleaned anything. As you can see, these come complete with all the years of gunk that have accumulated on them. I sure do clean my hands afterwards though. Ewwww. Anyway, any thoughts on the "no date" pieces I've posted? Are they worth anything?
