Here are 3 more Gallienus ants And I have another couple more on there way My focus on the third century brings me in contact with many gallienus coins. I have a hard time saying no to vf-ef Gallienus types. Gallienus Billon Antoninianus. Mint of Asia. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right / AETERNITAS AVG, Saturn standing right, holding scythe, PXV (short for TR P XV) in ex. Cohen 44. RIC 606. SR-10170 Gallienus AE Antoninianus. Mint of Asia (RIC) or Antioch (Göbl), 266 AD. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / IVBENTVS AVG Emperor standing facing, head left, holding Victory and upright spear. Mintmark VIIC dot. RIC 615a; Goebl 1641a; Sear 10249. Note: This coin sometimes has the reverse legend IVBENTVS or LVBENTVS AVG. The coin is dated to 266-267 CE by the exergual mark, VIIC, which means COS VII. Note: VIIC in the exergue is indicative of the seventh and last consulate of Gallienus, which commenced in 266 AD This next coin is harder to find and especially for reasonable money. Or at least that has been my observation. The obverse is a more crude portrait, but like the character of it Gallienus AR Antoninianus. 258 AD. IMP GALLIENVS P AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust right / IOVI VICTORI, Jupiter, standing on cippus inscribed IMP C E S (Imperator cum exercitu suo = Emperor with his army), holding Victory and spear. Cohen 398. Feel free to add on
Very nice! Here's my favorite Gallienus: Gallienus, AD 253-268 Roman Billon Antoninianus; 4.40 g; 23.5 mm Uncertain eastern mint, AD 255-256 Obv: IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS AVG, radiate and draped bust, right Rev: RESTITVT ORIENTIS, Tyche, left, presenting wreath to emperor, right, who holds spear in right. Refs: RIC 448; RSC 902; Cohen 903.
All three are very nice! I'd like one with the Saturn reverse someday. This one's from my 2016 Secret Santa. GALLIENUS AE Antoninianus. 2.66g, 20.8mm. Rome mint, AD 268. RIC 156. O: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate bust right. R: P M TR P XVI COS VII, Emperor standing left, holding globe and sceptre.
This Gallienus ant was my first ancient coin - purchased 42 years ago. The second photo gives a more accurate rendition of its deep green patina. Salus on the reverse and still my only Gallienus.
Cool coins @TJC, I particularily like the third one Having hard time choosing just one, I will post all my Gallienus ants Gallienus, Antoninianus Rome mint, AD 267-268 IMP GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right APOLLINI CONS AVG, Griffin left. Gallienus had funny portraits. My only one, which was a gift from @Valentinian Hrmm, I don't have a picture. That shall be fixed shortly!
Here's one of my two - both in relatively poor condition, but this one has a stag walking right on the reverse.
Very Gallienus all! @ Cucumbor: Like the Griffin, Very nice & I need one. Also like the Venus holding helmut example.
TJC, That's a nice looking group of double-denarii, along with other nice looking coins from CT members. I've only got one double-denarius of Gallienus bought slabbed long ago, see photos below. The coin is mint state, 23 mm, 4.29 gm, & the reverse depicts Hercules with a club leaning on a rock.
I know it's a necro bump, but what the heck Cologne (?) Mint GERMANICVS MAX V in nice good-ish quality silver A scarce type I sold on ebay a while ago, issued for unknown "Saecvlares" games at Antioch Exceptionally nice portrait for a late AE ant One of the nicer sole reign issues I have been able to find in "good" silver Whoops! The engraver "accidentally" put a Christian cross on this zoo coin invoking Diana. Absolutely barbaric!
Cool new ants @TJC , that Jupiter reverse is very cool. Here is a rough Jupiter reverse on a Gallienus ant...this coin went swimming with me one day. Gallienus AE Antoninianus, 260-268 AD O: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust right. R: IOVI STATORI, Jupiter standing facing, head right, holding scepter & thunderbolt. Antioch mint. 22mm, 3.2g.
Another thread worth reviving, with some very nice coins of Gallienus. The coin with IMPerator Cum Exercitu Suo, unusual style and unusual mint caught my attention: Gallienus, AD 253-268, AR Antoninianus, Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne) mint, 1st emission, AD 257-258 (Joint Reign) Obv: Radiate and cuirassed bust right Rev: IOVI VICTORI, Jupiter, holding Victory and scepter, standing facing, head left, on cippus (small low pillar) inscribed IMP/C E S in two lines Ref: RIC V 21
