Currently on EBay from a formerly respected seller. Would you buy these coins?

The metal has been aged to appear genuine, but treatment of all 3 coins is similar, which gives it away (plus the fact that this seller has sold about a dozen of these types of coins, all in the same condition, over the last year or two).

What an embarrassment for a formerly reputable company, although someone explained a while ago that it was the father who built the reputation that the son has destroyed.

From an article in 2017 :

The contest has been going on for four years and is not yet over...

What an idiotic contest. Who in their right mind would think that including a fake coin in an auction catalog was a good promotional gesture? Am I missing something? It’s like a restaurant saying “Hey, tonight we will be serving a live rat in somebody’s soup. First one to find it gets a free dessert! Bon appétit!”

My first thought was, since 2017 is after lanz went dark, that it was a way for them to have their customers let them know which fakes were more obvious. As well, have them keep browsing despite seeing a fake coin... or twenty.

It was their back cover coin too, and the most expensive coin in the sale. My guess is they discovered it after the catalog was printed and made the "contest" to save face.

That makes better sense. And for more savvy folks like yourself, it would be pretty transparent.
