Lovely coin, can’t say the same about the picture quality

Well, it's significantly overgraded. That should be a 66 at most.

However, if you like buying plastic labels, go for it.

It must have excellent luster, but I see a couple of disctracting marks on the reverse...

Nice Coin. And the picture is fine. As I have said in the past. Why must some people say However if you like buying plastic labels, go for it? Or buy the coin not the slab. Same thing. Maybe some people prefer protected coins? Or maybe they cant grade them? Lots of reasons why they like buying plastic labels. I remember a saying if you cant say anything nice, then dont say anything.

Because the coin appears to be overgraded. I don’t think the comment was intended to talk down the coin, but rather to point out that it shouldn’t have graded that high.

The label is worth way more than the coin itself...

Most people can’t grade moderns especially not to that extent. There’s no way to say it’s overgraded without seeing it in hand and seeing what’s really there and what’s showing as a result of the photos. It’s really easy to make nice coins look bad with digital photos, they don’t just give out top grades randomly

I am absolutely in favor of buying slabbed coins. If you look at my collection, most of it is slabbed. Please don't misunderstand me. The point of my post was to say "That coin is seriously overgraded. If you want to buy a number on a label, then feel free to overpay for that thing. However, if you want to buy an accurately graded coin, stay away from that piece." The whole point of my post was "buy the coin and not the label."

If you can't grade, then this is exactly the sort of thing you'll get. And I'm not trying to be mean - I'm trying to get people to think about the coin. Sometimes, that isn't all fairy-tales and roses - sometimes that is harsh criticism. I'm not sorry if you don't like that.

To a certain extent, grading from photos is tricky. However, there are certain characteristics that just shouldn't be there on a 67+ coin: look at the roughness of Jefferson's cheek. That absolutely should not be on a 67+ coin, and I don't care how imperfect the rest of the pictures are. His cheek and jaw should be absolutely smooth. So yes, I can definitely say it's overgraded.

Can pictures of coins be deceiving ? Yes, most definitely. But pictures cannot show you something that is not there. They can however not show you something that is there.

In other words a picture cannot make it look like a coin has numerous contact marks, scratches, hairlines, etc when those things are not really on the coin. But, it is very easy for a picture taken from a certain angle to hide those things when any or all of them do exist on the coin.

Bottom line, that coin has way too many marks on it for it to be graded any higher than a 65. It is drastically over-graded ! And I don't need to see it in hand to know that. And neither does anybody else.

Those minor imperfections are why it’s not a 68. You can almost take it to the bank a lot of the minor noise there isn’t visible in hand.

Honest question - how do you know this?

Why do people say buy the coin and not the slab ? It's pretty easy, it's because for most buyers it is the slab that determines the cost - when it should be the other way around. It should be the coin that determines the cost - not the slab.

Buy the coin not the slab can be put another way - it means don't trust the opinions the TPG when it comes to grade. Ignore what it says on the plastic and grade the coin yourself.

As for the saying you mention - if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything. Well, that works just fine in some cases. But when saying something that is not nice is doing somebody a favor, saving somebody from making a mistake - it would be a far bigger wrong to keep your mouth shut !

Cheap point and shoot cameras like that absolutely can and do make chatter appear on silver coins that isn’t visible to the eye in hand. They’re rather famous for presenting coins in a much harsher light than they look in hand. If you don’t want to believe me go grab a 50 dollar one from Walmart and play around with a single desk lalight source

Honest answer - because he believes whatever the TPGs say. Even when it is blatantly obvious they are wrong.

I've seen enough coins, and I've seen enough pictures of coins, to know that a camera doesn't just invent marks and scrapes like that. Forget that the coin is in PCGS plastic. Look at the pictures and honestly grade the coin for yourself.

I’ve seen it a lot from pictures I’ve tried to take myself in the past with cheap point and shoot cameras. They magnify a lot of things that you just really wouldn’t see. Also I know how tight they are at the upper parts of the spectrum, they don’t just random make a coin a pop 14 with only 1 higher
