First off let me advise that for the most part, I collect older circulated coins. To me, AU-58 is the most ideal grade. I actually prefer the look of an AU coin than a MS coin. That said, I have a question about the modern coins, these ultra-high grades and their perceived (or legitimate) value. Do the collectors out there collect these coins because of rarity/investment purposes, or is it more of an aesthetic thing? I understand the competition surrounding registry sets too, but again, are these collectors collecting for bragging rights or value/long-term investment? I'd like to get a set of the new 2009 lincolns, and I haven't decided whether I want MS or PF. I'm probably fine with PF69 or MS65 coins, possibly even MS66. I definitely want certified coins. But if there is actually real long-term value in higher grade coins I'm open to shooting higher. I'm especially wary of the PF70 coins...it just seems that there are so many, are they truly any more desirable than PF69? To be clear, I'm only talking about PCGS/NGC certified coins, I'm nowhere near experienced enough to be able to grade MS coins accurately myself. Thanks for your help and guidance Ben
Lets see - I like au58 also, but I actually like wear on the older coins. To me people collect them because they are well struck in most cases, the ultimate in shiny. As for collector value - I think there are plenty and the prices will hold on them for a long time. I think the rarities are the higher grades in the fact there might only be fewer MS68's and 69's. Proofs I think will always have PR69's available. I think if you like them get them, but get them because you like them.
Moderns are just like any other coins; you can collect them in any grade you want or collect something else altogether. Most of the business strike regular issue moderns are pretty common in low grade unc but this isn't necessarily true and there are lots of varieties and special issues that can be rare in unc or any other grade. The demand for moderns tends to be a lot lower than for equally rare older coins so your dollar will go farther with these. Gem sets are actually obtainable for all the modern series and can be quite inexpensive. This goes double if you're willing to do the work to find the coins raw. These are just like any other coins in that you want to sell some coins once in a while to see what they're really worth. This isn't very important if you're spending a few dollars for raw coins but if you're spending a lot for slabbed coins it is. Of course selling is more complicated with moderns since few dealers are interested. You'll have to find the ones that are or sell them privately or on eBay otherwise.
