I was just curious as to the frequency of die cracks in our more modern coinage. I wondered if die cracking has become less frequent in more recent years with the huge influx in technology and precision. I realize this may not even be a factor and die cracking may be as prevalent today as it was in years past, but I've been really checking my coins out for little oddities and such lately and this question just came up whilst I was browsing. Please post pictures of your most recent coin (as far as age wise) exhibiting any die cracks; or any info pertaining to the frequency of die cracks say, post 1950? Curious minds want to know!
There are lots of them. On a pure numbers basis there are far more than there ever were in years past. But that is due to the huge numbers of coins minted, and not only in total numbers, but in numbers of coins minted by a specific die. For some denominations a single die may mint hundreds of thousands, if not over a million coins.
I have dozens of the 1999-P GA SQ's with as many as 6 separate die cracks forming a progression. Advances in technology won't make any difference if a die is used to strike tens or hundreds of thousands of coins. Chris
