I seen few of these for sell, the ones am talking about just in case there is more then one type are the pennies. You get three different kinds in one roll flying eagles, wheat, and Indian. From what I seen they don’t look that good in shape maybe fine to good very fine at best. Anyways I just want to get everyone opinions on these rolls. Should I buy some or is it a scam? I almost forgot 10 dollars each.
While I might not go so far as to call them a "scam", I wouldn't call them a good buy either. At a price of $10 per roll, you're not going to get a flying eagle cent in every roll. More than likely, you'll get 48 wheat cents and 2 common date indian head cents in AG/G. Then 1 out of every 10 rolls will have a flying eagle cent. I would definitely pass.
mixed rolls probably made up. Hi, I to have seen these with increasing numbers of rolls promising an Indian, or early wheat cent on the end of rolls. Not long ago I searched eBay and there must of been 20 or so adds for such. These have got to be made up I just have a gut feeling - I have searched several hundred thousand rolls over 11 years and have seen everything but the kitchen sink in them. While many have been true and original especially memorial rolls and 8 out of 10 BU wheat rolls many have been contrived. In the next 10 years I suspect that more than half the rolls for sale will be tampered with in some form or another. Be careful buying these and as you study more gain the knowledge needed to discern rolls as to originality. With some practice you will know when open them if they are original or not. If the selling point is an end roll coin I would not buy - many people have access to rolling machines and can make up anything that they want to with those. Remember, we never saw these type rolls in the past!! Ben
As I have said several times, only buy these only if you can identify the coins at each end of the roll and you need/want each of those two coins and the price of the roll is the price of those two coins plus about $2.50 for the rest of the coins in the roll. Remember, there is no such thing as an unsearched roll. Also the rolls advertised as original bank rolls are only original as far as the wrapper goes. It may still have the original crimp on one end but the other end has been opened and re-rolled shut. And that's after the original cents in the roll have been replaced with carefully selected ones. I have bought several of these rolls and the only ones that were any good were one where there was an S-mint IHC at one end (it was a 1908) and a few that had early S-mint Lincolns. I probably broke even on cost.
All the advice given is good, you are only sure of the coins showing on the ends of the rolls. Anyone can make there own shotgun roll or "OBW" rolls. It cost less then $3 to have the devices to crimp the ends of the wrappers. Look at it this way, $3 for tools, few cheap wheat cents, very few better cents, some well worn wrappers, good story of where these "unsearched" rolls were found, Ebay here we come. BILL
