Hello guys! I am new to the forum and have lots of experience with antiques, jewelry, precious gems, antique fine art, asian antiques etc... and recently got into coins because a customer of the company I work for had lots of 1800s coins for sale (lots of $1-$5 Gold pieces). I hardly know anything about coins...I recently came across this penny today in my own change jar. I thought it was quite amazing and have never seen anything so cool in my life! The line goes right through the "In God We Trust" I compared it with a normal penny, and this is obviously a cool and rare mint error. I need some awesome expert advice to help me determine a value! I would love any comments, feedback for selling coins in the future, feedback for buying coins, and I would love to get to know you all! (Remember I'm a very excellent and knowledgeable antique dealer, so if anyone needs some expert antique advice, or has anything to sell... I'm always here!) Anyways, obviously something happened during the minting process to create this error...I have no idea what to call it or how much it's worth. Seems like a cool coin to me!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the secondary ring you see around the perimeter is caused by deterioration of the die which would probably account for the secondary image of the "L". Chris
That would make sense on my dime. I just got it and was trying to figure out how the die crack or deterioration is tied in to the secondary ring.
Thanks so much for the help guys! That's a great dime. Is that crack on the head an error? How much is something like that worth? (Are we allowed to talk about prices on this forum? Not sure.) I just looked at the penny again and the "L" is extremely "doubled"...now remember, I'm new to coins so I can't see a difference between this and a normal doubling. You can also see the doubling a bit in the "B", if I'm not mistaken. One thing I also want to point out for your consideration is that on my penny, there are two circular lines at the top...one superjacent to the other. As if one circle was stamped to the left and another slightly to the right. It's almost as if there is a "East-West" doubling here. (I am totally new to coins again, so please correct me if this is just worth 1¢) P.S. I just found a 1998 "Wide AM" Penny which is pretty cool!
A 1998 Wide AM? Those are pretty valuable in good condition, can we see pics of the coin and pics of the AM so we can verify it for you?
Was the photo of the dime to show how much my first penny (not the AM) is worth? I love it! I am so appreciative that you guys truly are following your passions with coins...I am so hooked to this website and talking with such passionate people such as yourselves. I am going to post photos of any coins I get in the future!
Nice wide am It looks AU but i don't know how badly the scratches on the obverse will affect it. Also it was my bad, I actually didn't understand that the real value was in the 1999 wide am cent. Still a keeper for sure. Nice cent.
