I collect early commemoratives. So far, I have 35 out of the 50 coin type set. I have tried to follow the sensible counsel more experienced collectors have given me to 'buy your keys first': I believe in the wisdom of this strategy, but have found implementing it to be somewhat problematic. Please allow me to explain: I've knocked out the Panama-Pacific (MS-65) and Spanish Trail (MS-65), but obviously I have bought many of the cheaper coins, too, leaving some keys outstanding in my set. I'm about to cash out of one of my stocks that I believe has peaked; this will free up about $3,500.00 for me to spend on my coins. In his great red book on early commmemoratives, the esteemed QDB recognizes the Hudson as 'one of the three rare type coins of the classic era of the early era.' But in comparing the two, the Missouri has higher prices in grades MS-65 and higher. And no one questions that the Hawaiian is the biggest rarity of the 50 coin type set. So my question is: does it make more sense for me to buy a Missouri in MS-65 or an Hawaiian in MS-64? Both are roughly equally priced, and I find both designs equally appealing; so that is a wash. What other considerations should I take into account in making my decision between these two coins? Thank you for sharing your experience and insights fellow collectors.
Two things. 1. Check what's available right now in each of the two designs(teletrade, heritage, eBay, etc). Meaning just because you have a fairly accurate pop report doesn't mean that 70% of the Missouri are on the market as opposed to 10% of the Hawaii in whichever grade you desire. 2. Just because the Hawaii slab says MS64 doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't have twice the eye appeal as the Missouri MS65(are pics available of both?) If the Hawaii has great pop/eye appeal, I'd get it. But that depends on your answer on #1 & #2.
Don't decide ahead of time, which issue you will buy first. Wait for the right, specific coin to come to you and talk to you.
I agree with both of those comments. You have a plan but the market does not always work with your plans Start shopping and see which works for you but get back with us and let us see your beauty!!
