I think it's time for an ID the World Coin contest. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to ID a coin by country, date, and denomination. Take a look at the coin and the closeups of characters at the bottom, then PM your guess to me. There is a large character similar to an "O" on the obverse. That, and the pictures of the reverse, contain all the information you need. The first three members who send correct answers will be given a choice of several world coins in XF or better condition from my collection. (Extra credit will be give for the KM#) If there are no correct answers, by 3 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time next Thursday, all entrants who post their desire to participate will have their names thrown in a hat, and a winner will be selected. (There are a couple of forum members - and I'm sure they know who they are - who are free to send me their guesses, but will be ineligible for prizes. )
Well, we have a couple of winners, but no third one yet. However, I've decided we'll have a drawing regardless, so if you are interested in finding out what the surprise packages will be, be sure and post in this thread in addition to PMing your guess.
Well,a number of you are very lucky that I can read Arabic numerals on modern coins.I have a lot of trouble reading those on hammered coins though. Aidan.
Just so you're aware folks - Roy is kinda tied up with visiting family this week. He's not ignoring your posts. He'll be checkin in soon enough
sorry, my original post didn't come out the way I wanted it too. I was just making sure I didnt miss something....if you read this and are confused, don't worry about it....anyways back to normal now.
Hi Gang. There are three winners for correct ID and one more whose name will come out of the hat as soon as my daughter and grandson go home to Maryland Monday afternoon. I'll probably post all the results, including surprise package contents, Monday evening. Thanks for bearing with me
I have since discovered that I had the wrong denomination. It is a 10 Millim, not 10 Ghirsh,as I though.I know that I got the AH date conversion right. Aidan.
It's a good thing I didn't ID the "three" winners in my last post, as further examination of the answers shows there were only two - Sledneck and Pilot, who each correctly ID'd the coin as KM#31.1, a 5 millim from Sudan dated 1956 in Arabian characters. Neither of them mentioned the double-dating, which included the 1376 AH date, but the contest rules didn't require it, so no harm, no foul. Two people would have had everything right if only they had noticed that the coin had a scalloped shape, instead of the round shape of the similarly designed 5 ghirsh denomination. Each winner should PM me with your mailing address, and your choice of three from this list: 1999 50 cedis, Ghana, Unc. 1976 1/2 New Penny, Great Britain, AU 1975 1 Peseta, Spain, XF 2000 5 Centavos, Guatemala, Unc. or Heisei 3 (1991) 1 yen, Japan, AU All five unsuccessful guessers had their names thrown in the same hat with the people who posted their interest in this thread, The name that rose to the top was Spider, so I need him to PM the shipping address for his 1956 British old-style large copper halfpenny and BE2500 (1957) Aluminium-Bronze 50 Satang (1/2 Baht) from Thailand.
Thank you very much ! That's my first contest-winning in your lovely forum, ready for more ID quizes.
