Hello I was searching some rolls and I found this dime its the first time I see this error It looks like a penny I think is just missing the plating any help will be appreciated Thanks
Or just tarnished heavily. You can usually tell missing layers by looking at the side of the clad coins. Can you post a pic of the side? Is it as thick or thinner than a normal dime? What's it's weight?
It is possible that this has been exposed to an acid or alkali that has reacted with the nickel. The weight of the coin will tell you if the nickel layers are missing.
Here is a pic of the edge it is the same color as both sides I don't have my scale with me till tomorrow
Ever see a coin come out of the toilet after it's been clogged and plunged? They sort of look like that after having been stuck in there for a long time.
When I was younger I lived in a large apartment building. I've seen coins plunged out of toilets and they look exactly like the one in the picture above. I'm not joking. lol
Lol maybe it is one of those I checked the weight but I notice my scale weights grams only no milligrams it is a cooking scale lol so it just says 2 grams
IMHO Your coin is not missing both clad layers. It looks like a normal dime that has been discolored by some environment outside of the mint. That woud be a post mint damaged (PMD) coin. There is a possibility that it is an error known as struck on a sintered planchet. Here is a previous CT thread describing the sintered planchet error. However, I think you have a found a dime with PMD. http://www.cointalk.com/t143074/ An accurate weight & inspection in-hand might give more information so don't spend it quite yet.
Consider soaking the coin in Acetone for a day & see if the color remains (or washes-away). Sometimes coins that sit in a puddle of cola (soda pop) can become discolored. A soak in Acetone would remove the staining. The Acetone soak would not harm a sintered planchet error. Cover the Acetone container during the soak so it does not evaporate or cause you health problems.
