1999 New Jersey state quarter missing second 'r' in the word "Crossroads" Is it worth anything? Thanks. Harv
This is a quote from a post by coin expert PapaJack, that I found on another site....hope it helps. "No coin can be exactly valued without being seen. For the most common cause of missing letters on coins get a magnifier and light source. Examine the coin around the missing feature. Tilting it in all directions. Are there scratch marks, or is the surface different? Is there a ghost of the missing item or scaring where it should be? Is the rest of the coin properly struck? Missing letters are usually caused by a filled die error. Grease and debris commonly get caught in the recesses of the dies as they produce coins. When the dies close on the blank the portion of the die filled with this debris won’t let the metal flow into it. These coins are common with weak or altogether missing features. The price you may get for them over the face value depends on what an error collector may pay for the particular coin. Error collecting is a branch outside of coins collecting. There is no fixed pricing on these error coins published and each one would have to be seen to be evaluated."
Hey, I just found a coin with the same thing. Missing the S and R in crossroads. Did you ever find any more info on this?
Welcome to the forum. Usually these old threads don’t get much attention paid to them. You would receive better replies with a thread of your own…… First off, without a photo we can only guess. These does are banging coins out lickety-split. Once a die gets worn down a bit, a worker will come along and polish the die so it can bang out a few thousand more before it is retired. Often, when those dies are polished, a small bit of polish compound, grease or whatever can fill the space where a letter is recessed into the die. The subsequent coins come out with that portion of the design missing. It is quite common……. But again, without photos that is only a guess.
Yes, it’s worth something. Twenty Five cents. Sounds like a grease filled die in that area but without photos I’m guessing.
But I thought I would become rich.. isn't it worth thousands? These threads are so funny.. Missing letters
