I took a swing at this one, but came up short: Lot of (3) Seated Liberty Type, 1871 Half Dime 5C, 1857 O Dime 10C 1842 Quarter I don't know much about SL coinage in general, but 1842 is certainly a better date, and the coin here doesn't look obviously problematic (as opposed to the half-dime and dime in the same auction). Any opinions on this "eBay gamble" from the more knowledgeable?
I feel your pain. I missed this one a few hours ago; http://www.ebay.com/itm/350801958147?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
IMO, I think they all may have been cleaned. Not as harshly as the dime though. Pretty tough rim ding on the half and rim appears to be severely scratched. I really don't know much at all about the Seated Series, just looking at them as coins. But, what do I know? HA!
As the second-place bidder, I'll choose to take that as a compliment on my valuation skills, rather than the dumb luck that it actually was. I'm sure the winner would've been a lot happier to get it for $88 instead of $160+ -- but it's also possible that there were other would-be snipers who didn't quite exceed the final two bids.
Yeah, the reverse on the half dime was completely trashed. This auction was basically about the quarter.
