Is the misaligned mint mark on this 1948S Jefferson quarter attached very unusual? Just discovered this among some of my coins. Had never noticed it before. Not that knowledgeable about this type of thing. Thanks . . if you have any feedback, or can link me to similar examples.

One, nothing is wrong with the mintmark. :D
Two, it is a Washington Quarter, not a Jefferson Quarter. :D
And three, it wouldn't be called misaligned on a coin, it would be off-centered. :D

    Hope this helps! :D

BTW, haven't seen you here before! :welcome:

Up until 1990 mint marks were punched onto the dies by hand and consequently show a lot of variation. As long as the "S" is within that target area and not impacting other design elements it's perfectly normal to have variation in placement as well as rotation of the mark.

    LOL.....

Also keep in mind that the year and mint mark is a harder date and known to be counterfeited (Mint mark added). Look closely at the coin posted by the OP. The wear on the coin is way too advance compared to the mint mark itself. The mint mark IMO might and could have been added much later to the quarter.

Thanks for pointing that out about the mint mark. It 'does' seem to stand out unusually sharper than the rest of the coin. A lot of dulling obverse wear as well.
