I'm thinking of the 1880 IHC with the misaligned clash. It's in Cherrypickers. I can't understand how this could happen. How could a press be that far off?

Misalignments as great as 40% are known. Also, among Lincoln cents from 1995 to 2000 there are a number of misaligned die clashes of this severity. It's probably the entire die assembly that moves, rather than just the die. Another possibility is a mishap during die installation.

Thanks Mike. I thought maybe the die got dropped but didn't think it could fall with enough force to damage the other die. I need to study how these presses worked. Anyone know of a site with information on the presses used at that time?

Interesting, never seen one that far off and wouldn't have imagined it possible. Until now that is.

Larry, I know of no sites anywhere that do much more than give basic descriptions of the minting process, and I mean very basic. Would wager you already know more than you can find on web site.

But if ya find one, lemme know. I'd like to list it.
