Hi all, hope you are all well as can be. This 1923 D peace dollar has a mintmark i would like explained to me. Can someone with experience in these cast a careful eye over this please. There are no RPM's for this date listed on any of the reputable sites so i can safely assume, i think, that it is not one. However, there is a vertical bar to the left and the top and bottom left pointed ends of the D appear duplicated with one set being slightly rotated CCW. What has caused this? Many thanks to all who spend a bit of their time over this and can any constructive comment
Your images are not clear enough to make a call. The close up does to my eye looks repunched. But md is not off the table either not having the specimen in hand. Try to reshoot lighting it from the top as that may expose other devices with md. Chances are it is else where on the reverse it is probably machine doubling.
I have seen something I thought was similar to what your coin appears to show on a 1923-D VAM-2. Take a look to see if you have a DDR, VAM-2. I cannot tell from the pictures.
Thanks. The only doubling on the reverse is slight on the eagles right shoulder, top of head and along with the large die break on the obverse from rim to rim from the T to the Y, the guys at Vamworld attributed this as VAM 1AL edit: i look forward to seeing your replies later. It is now 3AM in Spain and i need my bed, lol
Why is your link taking us to an 1881 Morgan vam 54b? What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?
While I can't make a call from your picture, the likely explanation is die fatigue. This tends to blur and distort outside edges of finer details toward the rim, and the mint mark on a Peace dollar is both the finest detail on the coin and very close to the rim.
Thankyou, as I said in the OP, couldn't be a RPM as it would be listed somewhere, but it is nice to have a reason behind the oddities so it can be catalogued with the coins details.
