This city changed hands quite a few times B.C.E., and quite a number of different rulers minted their coins there. Here's a quick list that I compiled - am I missing anyone?

The dates represent the rulers' tenures, not necessarily when they were minting coins in Damascus, hence the occasional overlap. There also seem to be a number of provisionally-attributed, perhaps autonomous issues, according to Hendin et al.

Also, there is a large gap of time between Alexander III and Demetrios II, during which I can't find any coins minted in Damascus. I assume that had to do with the struggles between the Seleucid and Ptolemaic empires, leaving the city taking a back seat to other seats of power.

I'd appreciate any wisdom or commentary on the subject. :)

Damascus is an interesting city. If it were more settled and open to foreigners today I would like to visit. After Antioch on the Orontes declined, the Bishop of Antioch, one of the five great seats of power of the Christian Church moved there. Many do not know about this branch of Christianity, but it has a continuous set of rulers since Roman days like the Catholic and Orthodox churches have. It is theoretically on par with them, along with the Bishop of Alexandria and Jerusalem.

Or if you've got coins minted in Damascus, of any era, post them!

The city seems to have been at a crossroads of many civilizations throughout history, and the coinage reflects that abundantly. You'd have quite an eclectic type set if you assembled a set of coins minted in Damascus throughout the ages.
