I got one of my mint sets today. I thin what I am seeing on these is just grease from the mint....its like a haze. Is it ok to use a little acetone to clean them before I 2x2 them?
Looks like the start of toning to me, think milk spots. Unfortunate, I hope its just something your acetone rinse takes off. Reed.
just mint sets. I actually got a nice deal on a few. I really like getting them. Its fun to check out a coin thats unmolested lol. It was grease. Each coin had it on it. Came off with a soft rag. This set came with a couple weird coins too that ive never seen even in pitcures. One is a "D" for Denver and the other is a P. They just say uncirculated proof set on them and feel super light. Pretty neat I guess.
its this coin (came with the mint set)...sorry for the picture I had to take with my scope. I left my camera upstairs and am not doing the steps again yet. It was a cool surprise to me.
A minty-fresh uncirculated or proof coin is always a beautiful sight, whether they're worth a bunch on the open market or not. Be careful with rags, they always leave traces. I'd recommend acetone, etc. (Of course, when I was young, I used toothpaste to clean coins, worked real good, oy...)
Yep that nasty toning will wipe right of in the early stages and the rag will leave marks for sure no matter how “soft” it is. Reed.
