Has anybody else had problem coins in this years mint sets? I have noticed some rim dings in the nickels in my sets.

I bought two mint sets this year just so I could keep a set sealed and open a set for the unc. state quarters. To my amazement, they aren't as nice & flashy as some pieces I have gotten in my pocket change fresh from rolls. I might just start buying rolls as there seems to be nicer specimens than the mint sets.

Not the Nickels in my sets, but the Plily Kennedy looks as though someone beat it with an Ice Pick then ran over ir for good measure....

    Both of my new sets.....

Unfortunately, buying US Mint products has become simular to the "unsearched grab bag" deals we see all the time. There is no telling what you are going to get, although the likelyhood of it being something special are slim to none.

I suppose that since many people purchase these because of the original packaging, the condition of the coins is really secondary.

I also think it's safe to say that the Mint's claims of special quality control measures, as it applies to mint and proof sets, are to say the least, exagerated.

i got my 11-coin silver proof set today and it's perfect....maybe they pay more attention to the silver stuff?

Well the proof sets over the years have gotten better and better, while the Mint sets have really been more miss than hit these past few years. Jody hit the nail on the head. The Mint knows that most of the value is based on the box, not the coins.
It is a shame that we dealers and collectors have tolerated it for so many years. We bought a few hundred sets, and haven't found a single coin worth the time and money to submit for grading. Most are nice, some are close to gem, but none would meet the standards for an ultra grade.
