Mint and Private Issue Medals

    The Currency of Fame

    Again, my interest in medals is more from reading about them. When I was at the ANA in NYC last summer, I bought THE CURRENCY OF FAME. I also got "Goethe's Renaissance Medals" from the ANA Library Sale. I like to find those old Franklin Mint medals at coin shows. For three to five dollars, I can get really beautiful mementoes to give as gifts to friends and family -- and of course to myself.

    I collect aviation materials, for instance. And when I looked to buy a small airport last year, I brought the prospective seller (heck, all he lacked was title...) a US Mint Lindbergh medal restrike. I already had one. He was impressed.

    I think that medallic art is really underappreciated by numismatic collectors. Everyone gets so caught up in "money" that they have a hard time getting away from that aspect and into the pure aesthetics of the medium.
