Minimum Grade for Determining Die Types?

I've never before decided to try my hand (and eye) at collecting coins at the die type level.
But I got a copy of Logan and McCloskey, Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837, to look into the possibility.
If I DO give it a try, I'll stick to the Capped Bust design (1829-1837.)

    So, my question is:
What is the minimum grade I should consider in order to have a 90-95% chance of IDing the die pairs?

I know there will be a lot of variables, but for a start I'd like to have a general "rule of thumb".

It can be done with a G-4, altho Fine is far easier.
