Hi all, I've had this one for a week or two but I never found the right time and opportunity to post it. Making a new topic seemed like a bit of a waste for what is essentially an unremarkable coin. Not rare, not unusual, not an unknown variant and it definitely IS listed in RIC . So, I kept off posting for a while, but with a Saturday glass of Dutch courage, here goes. Probus, AD 276-282, silvered antoninianus/aurelianianus, Rome mint, fourth officina, 5th emission, AD 280. Weight 2.76g, diameter 21 mm. Edit: RIC 183.. What can I say, I've come to love the style of these coins a lot, and my interest in this period im general has only grown this year.
Great coin and a very popular type, I'm glad you posted. Here's mine. Probus AD 276-282. Rome Antoninianus Æ silvered 23mm., 4,96g. IMP PROBVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right, with Medusa on breastplate / ROMAE AETER, hexastyle temple within which statue of Roma holding Victory or Palladium and sceptre, in exergue, R crescent Γ.
So far we have seen the Consular and regular obverses so we should mention the Military obverses which came in spelled out and abbreviate versions just as we have seen above. There were many variations of armor and shields. I always wondered if Probus had a wardrobe equal to what was shown on his coins. The OP is a good photo o a nice coin. Thanks for sharing.
While you may consider it unremarkable @Guilder Pincher , I quite like it. I really enjoy seeing all these different coins. Be they rare and pristine or unremarkable and somewhat cruddy (yours is not btw lol). Thank you all for sharing your coins!
