Is there any reliable mintage numbers on the Mexican 8 reale Pillar coins. If so where can I find them.

Well yes and no. If you're asking is there a book where you can go a look up the mintage numbers for a given year and mint - no there is no such book. But you can determine, with a bit of work, approximate mintage numbers for given dates and mints.

The Spaniards kept track of the total weight in silver they struck into coins in any given year. In 1978, Alberto Pradeau did the research and published the total weights for the Mexico City mint for the years 1733 through 1771. So what you have to do is take those total weights for a year & mint, and using the percentages by weight that were recorded by the Potosi mint for the various denominations ( since they were the only ones who ever kept track ) - you can get a pretty good idea of mintage numbers.

In a nutshell - approx 57% of the total weight was 8 reales. Each of the other 4 denominations was 11%.

You can find most of the information you need to determine the Mexican mintages in the book - The Milled Columnarios of Central & South America by Frank Gilboy.

    Doug,
I was asking because this is my new purchase from Dan Sedwick and was wondering about "key" years?

I see has the book "The Milled Columnarios of Central & South America by Frank Gilboy" you referenced for sell also. I'm curious but not enough to buy the book .. I just wanted a good speciman of the Mexico Pillar for my collection. I'll try to find the book in one of my local libraries or maybe ANA ??

Oh man you're gonna hate me :(

I read the rarity rating one line down - the rare coin is the overdate 8/7

The plain 68 is a common date. Sorry - I got all excited for you and misread it. But that is still a beautiful coin. I'll figure out the mintage numbers for you and post them.

    There were approx 7,026,000 minted.

    GDJMSP,

It was late and I didn't get overly excited on your initial post. If fact I was kind of surprised that Dan Sedwick would have let such a coin go for the price I paid (Average /above average for the grade based on ebay auctions and his website).

All that said I'm very pleased with the coin because it is a beautiful quality example of the speciman, which is all I was looking for.

So you just keep giving me advice and it'll all work out in the long run ;)

Off to work I go.... I have to go show off my new coin !!!! :D :D

 I live in Mexico and see many coins for sale at markets. Where can I learn the worth of Mexican coins in general?

Howdy Michael - Welcome to the Forum !!

Instead of trying to learn the value of the coins you would be better served if you learned how to authenticate them first. There are a great many counterfeits out there.
