Emperor Maximilian, the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, was appointed Emperor of Mexico with the help of the French. At the time, Mexico owes massive amounts of money to France, and the French felt that by overthrowing the local government and putting a European monarch on the throne of Mexico, they'd be more likely to get paid. So Maximilian became the emperor of Mexico, and it helped that the Americans were too distracted by their civil war to do anything about it. But eventually through a series of military encounters, the rebel Mexican troops managed to defeat the forces of Maximilian and he was executed. Coinage of his is not super common, but also not exactly rare, but problem free straight grade examples are a lot harder to come by. Most of the survivors have conditional issues, with scratching and cleaning being the most common. So I'm pretty happy to have found a nice AU straight graded one. Feel free to post anything Mexican you want to share.
