My parents just got back from a cruise in Mexico, instead of trying to get loose change from circulation like I've told them, they got me a souvenir board with about 25 coins and a 10 peso billed GLUED on. I'm like, gee thanks, but they are ruined. The coins range from 1 c to 50$ from the 1940s to 2001. Some of the coins look to be chemically treated with unusual rainbow toning. The board was 10 US$. Honestly i think it's a total rip off and numismatically speaking it might as well be junk. I can even see some of the excess dried glue in a form of a yellow stain. My question is: Would it be better to try extracting the coins off the board and see if soap and water can wash off the glue before it further damage the coins or I might as well just leave the coins on there? The 10 peso bill may be a bit tricky to peel off. At this point i don't even know IF the adhesive can be washed off.
Make up a bunch of dog poo, and sell it on EBay; then tell your family not to do you any favors in the future.
That's pretty bad. My parents just came back from a country-hopping cruise and said they saved some currency. I think they must have waited until they got the most worn and nastiest bills, and then kept those. Not exactly what I was thinking, but I didn't mention to look for some that weren't ripped and brown.
Look at it this way... You mom and dad thought enough about you to stop and spend money on something that wasn't a life or death matter...I would keep it and hold it in a good place in my collection! It will be something you can remember years down the road. Speedy
I'm with Speedy on this one. Sure its a bunch or ruined coins; think of how unique bad coins would be in you collection!
I have an aunt who got me a similar item from Israel... luckily the coins are just held to the board with lamination, and not GLUED on. The stamps you'd never be able to remove without destorying them, but theoretically I could get the coins out if I so desired. My grandmother traveled to Mexico a lot, and I have quite a wide variety of Mexican coins from the 1940's up to recent stuff I got from Mexico myself. My favorite of the more modern ones is the current bi-metallic 10 peso piece... great looking coin. Just got a nice looking silver 1 peso coin yesterday.
If it was me, I’d grin and thank my fokes for the nice gift. As for glue and what not destroying the value. Most 1900’s Mexican coins in EF or less condition has little or no value over melt. That’s why I collect them. :goofer:
