if i wanted to store some common circulated coins in a metal container that u might get food in, would any long term effects happen to the coins?

It might depend on what was in it before....

If it was washed good before you stored any coins in it I would guess it would be alright.

I have a wooden tub that I put all of our change in and about 1-2 time I year I cash it in....I take out any dates I need and all state quarters.

Metal on metal might be a bad thing. I'd ensure the coins were in tubes or 2x2s (not flips) or Air-Tites or something. Dissimilar metals (like a copper cent touching a steel box) might result in increased deterioration.

Well--I would guess it would be alright al long as it is CLEAN....and DRY!!

The cardbord flips are cheap and nice to store coins in...I would get them.

but would the butter container have any damaging contents?

Assuming the container was glass or plastic (no PVC), and assuming it was clean (no butter or soap residue) and dry, and paper-free, and had no other contents other than coins, I would think it is safe.
