Im seriously thinking of trying out some metal detecting as a hobby , i do lot of fishing and would be great to set up my fishing gear while waiting for a bite to metal detect in the vicinity.Being from the uk its an ideal place to do this many old coins are found daily from enthusiast and the idea of not knowing the next beep could be a hoard of mint old gold coins ect must be a great buzz. Has anyone else tried metal detecting and have you had any success?
I absolutely love metal detecting. It's actually a lot like fishing (LOL) You know how it feels right when that fish takes the bait? That's what it feels like when you see or feel a coin....ohhhh yeeeah. Very rewarding. Then ya wanna see what kind it is. It takes a LOT of patience. Most of the stuff I dig up are nails. Next to that would be odd junk...then pop tops...and finally coins. I'll find a coin 29/30 holes I dig. Research...find where old homes were..but old homes bring old nails and metal. Find a good detector and have patience.
Although I have not gone metal detecting in at least five years, I used to enjoy the hobby. My grandfather got me started back when the detectors could only tell you whether or not there was metal under foot, boy has the gear come a long way! My method in years past was to find old maps, in the case of the United States, I often used the first Geographical Survey Map of 1866 (if memory serves). I would look for streets on the map which no longer existed. And, since the map showed homesteads, if I found a street I would seek permission to detect in the vicinity of the old homes. Although I never found anything to retire on, I did find quite a few old coins, antique toys, medals, etc. My advice to you is to try it out with some inexpensive gear. If you enjoy it, invest in a high end detector and see what you can find!
i must give it a go i kinda apeals to me and scotland is just littered with old ruined castles ect. Also around small lochs(scottish for a lake) ect is where lot of people would picnic ect.would be worth finding out the old tracks that would run to the towns from the glens.there used to be more people in the highlands 500 years ago than there is today.Be good to search out where the gathering of the clans were held where trading was done and daughters swapped between then. The sites would be perfect places for this as have been done for 1000s of years.ya can lay bets a lot of people stashed there wealth when they say the english armies coming over the hills to burn out there villages. Heck ive convinced myself this is something that must be done.
